If you spent a bundle on your Michigan wedding, it turns out that you have a greater chance of divorcing. And, statistics say, the more pricey the rock, the more divorce is likely too. A study released by Emory University found that couples who spend over $20,000 on their wedding are 3.5 times more likely to get divorced than those who spend between $5,000 and $10,000 for their nuptials. And women whose engagement ring cost between $2,000 and $4,000 were 1.3 times more likely to get divorced than women with a ring costing between $500 and $2,000.
All this being said, it was also found that couples who spend less than $500 on an engagement ring have higher divorce rates too. The conclusion, it would seem, is that money really can’t buy love… but that having some money certainly doesn’t hurt.

Resist the Bridal Hype
The wedding industry is massive. Bridal magazines and television shows encourage couples to go all out so they can have the “right” everything, from gowns to tuxes to flowers to favors. The focus is on the event and not the relationship, the size of the ring instead of the amount of communication.
People who can’t afford the wedding of their dreams instead charge it, and go into debt before they even become husband and wife. Drowning in bills isn’t a good way to start any marriage. Splurging on an engagement ring may feel great in the moment but it can perhaps turn a husband resentful. Spending more for a ring or extravagant wedding might also be ways to compensate for lack of confidence in a relationship.
Ironically, there is also a study that says having more wedding guests leads to longer marriages. This is in direct opposition to the idea that spending more money on a wedding leads to divorce. More guests means you’ve got to spend more!
And perhaps people who make unwise decisions about the costs of their wedding are, in general, not so great with money, which can mean they’re more likely to have marriage-ending financial issues in the future.

Focus on Your Relationship
It isn’t the wedding that determines the quality of your marriage or how good your future as a couple will or will not be. Ultimately, you can have a big wedding or a small wedding and still end up divorced or married for a lifetime, whether you’re rich or middle class. The most important takeaway is that an expensive, beautiful, fun wedding day doesn’t automatically mean the marriage will work out. Ignore the bridal industry hype. Adore your spouse instead.
