Each newsmaker whose divorce story makes the headlines inevitably causes many husbands and wives to rethink their own unions. Whether you can relate to high-profile weddings, splits, and incomes or not, the reality is that challenges in a marriage are not unique to one couple. Some people are just unable to keep their personal life, well, personal. Why not learn a divorce lesson or two from the trials of celebrities, whether you’re at the start of a divorce, completing your divorce, or well into a new relationship?
Janet Jackson Separates from Husband Wissam Al Mana
The news that Janet Jackson was expecting her first child at the age of 50 was stunning enough for fans. Just as surprising, however, is the latest announcement that Jackson and her Qatari businessman husband Wissam Al Mana have separated only three months after their son’s birth.
People say that children are never the reason for divorce, but sometimes you must admit that kids put a strain on a marriage. If it isn’t the act of child-rearing and exhaustion that does you in, issues may come to light after the birth of a child that were not previously apparent. And, as People magazine reports, the “cultural differences” between Jackson and Al Mana proved to be too much. (Hope they have a prenup!)
Perhaps it’s easy enough to overcome different cultures or religions when you are part of a pair. When children enter the equation, however, your choices became far more weighted with meaning. And a parent may determine that their partner’s beliefs do not match their own. There are, however, ways to amicably split and still maintain a semblance of normalcy for your child. Bird-nesting is a growing method of keeping the family together while the parents divorce.
Alabama’s Governor Robert Bentley Resigns After Sex Scandal
Sexual misconduct ultimately facilitated the fall from grace of Alabama’s Governor Robert Bentley. Bentley resigned Monday, April 10, after facing two misdemeanor charges, which included failing to file a major contribution report and knowingly converting campaign contributions for personal use. Witnesses say the governor used state money to hide his affair with a top aide.
This politician’s infidelity is certainly an embarrassment to his state. Perhaps the man could have been a little more discreet about his indiscretions, and careful. At one point, he accidentally sent a text to his wife that he had intended for his mistress. For Dianne Bentley, the ex-governor’s now ex-wife (who he was married to for 50 years), revenge was sweet. She surreptitiously recorded a phone call of Bentley telling his mistress that he loved her, and then some.
Infidelity can tank a marriage and, in general, cheating on your spouse can be expensive. Bentley took this cost to a whole new level. His public shame is a lesson for all cheating spouses, however – your need to fulfill whatever extramarital urges you may have can lead to public, personal, and professional turmoil that can be near impossible from which to recover.
